Jolian and I took a little trip this past weekend to Martha’s Vineyard and I wanted to share a few of the pictures with you. It’s truly a magical place. I’m a sucker for New England beach towns in general, but there’s something about this island that is so special. I’m amazed at how much of the land has remained undeveloped and still feels very rustic. Every inch of it is completely charming.
It’s not the easiest place to get to though. As I experienced on my last trip to the Vineyard, flights are delayed and cancelled rather frequently, not to mention they can be a bit pricey. You can always drive to the Cape and take a ferry, but traffic on the weekends can be terrible. To avoid these problems we decided to take the Seastreak Ferry, which leaves from East 35th Street in Manhattan and takes you all the way to Oak Bluffs on the Vineyard. The trip takes 5 hours, but the boat serves drinks and food and gives you the option to sit inside and watch movies or sit on the top deck and enjoy the view, so the time is pretty enjoyable. They said the weekend before last the water had been so rough they had to dock in Connecticut and put everyone on buses, so it could turn into a nightmare, but luckily we had beautiful weather and calm seas both ways. It made the trip feel very easy. I highly recommend it.
We spent our time on Martha’s Vineyard exploring the island, visiting the lighthouse at Gay Head, shopping in Edgartown, laying on the beach in Chappy, watching the sunset in Menemsha, and eating lots of lobster rolls, clam chowder, and homemade black raspberry ice cream. It was a great trip. It’s funny – it was our last trip just the two of us before the baby arrives, but we spent the whole time wishing he was with us. Every time we took a boat ride or saw a bunny rabbit hopping across the road we’d say how much we wished he was there to see it. I think we’re officially ready for baby!
