I’m heading to Austin tonight for 5 fun days including my baby shower on Saturday. I can’t wait! I have 4 lovely hostesses to give thank you gifts to and have been on the search for cute gift bags. I couldn’t find what I wanted so I decided to make my own using some unbleached muslin, fluorescent red paint, and twine I had on hand. I love the way they turned out. They’re almost as fun as the presents inside. They were super easy to make and could be adjusted to any size you needed. Wouldn’t they make cute favor bags? See how I made them below.
- fabric (I used unbleached muslin)
- rotary cutter (or scissors)
- cutting mat
- sewing machine
- freezer paper
- exacto knife (or scissors)
- paint (I used fluorescent red)
- stencil sponge brush
- card stock (or any paper to put behind fabric while painting)
- safety pin
STEP 1: Cut your fabric. I wanted the bags to be 11 in x 12 in before sewing, so I cut strips of fabric 11in x 24 in.
STEP 2: Fold the fabric in half (the fold will be the bottom of the bag) and sew up the sides with a 1/4 inch seam. Leave the top open.
STEP 3: Fold over the top and sew a 3/4 in seam. This will create a channel for the drawstring.
STEP 4: Sketch and cut a heart (or any shape you want) out of freezer paper.
STEP 5: Turn the bag inside out so the right sides are now facing out. Center your freezer paper heart stencil on one side of the bag and using dry heat, iron on the freezer paper shiny side down. Hold the iron on the edges of the heart for a few seconds until it has securely attached to the fabric.
STEP 6: Slide a piece of card stock or paper inside the bag before painting so the paint doesn’t bleed through to the other side. Using a stencil sponge brush, paint the heart.
STEP 7: When the heart is dry, peel off the freezer paper.
STEP 8: Cut 2 small slits, one on each side of the upper right hand seam. Attach a safety pin to your twine and thread it through the top seam channel to make a drawstring. All done!
