The Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali

by Leslie on December 16, 2011

In the center of Ubud is the Sacred Monkey Forest, a nature reserve home to Crab-eating Macaque monkeys. We waited until our last day in Ubud to visit the forest. We were warned that these monkeys were known to jump on your back, grab your backpack or anything else you’re carrying. I’d had an unpleasant incident in Gibraltar a few years ago with a monkey on my head, so I was a bit skittish about this one. Plus I’d thought I’d gotten my fill of monkeys on Monkey Beach in Phi Phi, my fill of pictures at least. We decided we needed to at least pop in for a minute so we could say we’d seen it. Upon entering we discovered the forest was teeming with baby monkeys! They were everywhere! Out came my camera. I dare any of you to see a baby monkey and not take 200 pictures. They were so cute. So we stayed a bit longer than intended, thankfully had no incidents with monkeys jumping on us, and ended up with all these pictures. Click below to see more.
