Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter

Yesterday we headed to the southern part of Hong Kong Island to see the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter. This harbor is home to the boat-dwelling Tanka population who arrived in Hong Kong before the 10th century. While these days, most of them have moved ashore, there are still some that remain in the shelter living aboard their boats. We took a tour of the area on a boat called a sampan and then stopped to have a touristy, subpar lunch of dim sum at Jumbo Floating Restaurant. I know, we’re suckers, but the restaurant was floating!
