Nothing makes me happier than a delicious ice cream cone on a hot summer day, so I’m thrilled that a Van Leeuwen opened in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn this year to feed my cravings. Ben Van Leeuwen started Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in 2008 with his wife, Laura O’Neill, and brother, Pete Van Leeuwen, selling scoops out of a truck. The business has quickly grown to include 3 trucks and 3 storefronts. They are even selling pints at Whole Foods. They focus on using the best local organic ingredients possible and you can really taste the difference. We went to the Boerum Hill location on Monday and got a strawberry and a pistachio cone. It was incredible how much the ice cream actually tasted like strawberries and pistachios, rather than being overly sweet with a hint of the flavor like most ice creams. The sugar cones were pretty amazing as well. If you are not in the mood for ice cream, I recommend going for their Intelligentsia coffee and to check out the adorable decor. With their wall of windows and bright yellow stools its hard to be anything but happy. To top it off, for any Bored to Death fans, the time before last we saw Jason Schwartzman and the real Jonathan Ames there. What’s better than ice cream? Eating ice cream while star gawking!
